Travel by boat and see the sights from the water
Meet your guide in central Milan and set off on your day trip on an air-conditioned coach. Sit back and enjoy the scenery as you travel to the Gulf of the Poets (Golfo dei Poeti) on the Italian Riviera.
On arrival, visit the delightful village of Portovenere located on the Ligurian Coast in the province of La Spezia, and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes the Cinque Terre. Learn interesting facts about the area and the Cinque Terre’s terraced landscapes, and hear about its five pretty villages, each wedged into rugged cliffs by the Mediterranean Sea.
Board a boat in Portovenere and enjoy a sea trip to Monterosso al Mare, the largest of the Cinque Terre’s ‘five lands’. When you arrive, enjoy free time to explore the village – divided by a pedestrian tunnel into the old town and new town – as you wish. You may want to stroll along the cliff-framed beach, delve into the pretty-as-a-picture squares, and relax over lunch (own expense) at one of the homespun restaurants or cafes.
Afterward, meet back with your guide and board a train to Vernazza, another of the Cinque Terre’s beautiful villages.
Step off the train into this gem of a village, with its prettily painted houses flanking a quaint harbor. Enjoy free time to explore as you please: perhaps with a stroll along the Via Roma, the café- and gelateria- (ice-cream parlor) lined cobbled street, a visit to the 14th century church, or a foray into the lovely narrow lanes.
Later, rejoin your guide and enjoy another scenic train ride to the town of La Spezia. Here, hop back on your coach and travel back to Milan, where your trip ends.
